Dog FAQS
"What if I get my pet after the April 1st deadline?"
Congratulations on your new dog! You have 30 days to register him or her.
"What if its too young to get a shot?"
Aww! That’s cute! Your dog needs to get vaccinated no later than 6 months of age, and don't forget their booster!
"I’m just renting, I’m not staying in town long, do I still need to register?"
If you are living here, so is your dog. You also have the added incentive to be a good tenant and make sure your dog is up to date with vaccinations and is registered. Anyone with concerns is welcome to look at our town's registry. If your dog isn't on it, your landlord will likely hear about it.
"I used to register my dog every year, but they passed away, what should I do?"
Losing a pet is so hard. Please let us know if your dog has passed on. It really helps keep our records clean and you won't get any more reminders in the mail or over the phone.
"What if my unregistered dog bites someone?"
Well, this could get ugly. Your dog will have to be quarantined for 10 days at your cost. The person your dog just bit isn't going to be very pleased that they might have a rabies shot in their near future, and you could be facing a penalty from the town for not having your dog registered, on top of a complaint from the person your dog bit.
"How do I register my dog?"
Oh my goodness it’s so easy! All you have to do is bring a copy of your dog's rabies vaccination to our lovely ladies at the Town Hall. I highly recommend the visit, but if you prefer mail, they will send out a form to you. Fill it out, enclose a copy of your dog's rabies certificate, with the proper fee, and you will receive in return, a beautiful piece of jewelry to affix to your dog’s collar. (No room here to go into detail, but this little tag can be a real life-saver if Fido takes a Spring stroll in the upcoming months!) Please contact the town if you need a form sent to you, 586-2823
"What if I don't register my dog?"
You will be charged a late fee, may be liable for a fee up to $500.00 and in the end, your pet may be taken from you because IT IS THE LAW TO REGISTER YOUR DOG.
