Dog Laws & Licenses
All dogs in Craftsbury should be licensed by April 1 each year at the Town Clerk’s office. The fee is $9 for a neutered male or spayed female, and $13 for a non- neutered male or non-spayed female. A portion of these fees ($5) goes to the state of Vermont, and the rest to the town. Dogs are not allowed to run free. When off their owner’s property, dogs must be accompanied by a person who can keep the animal under control, either on leash or by voice command.
If you have a complaint about a barking dog, contact the Animal Control Officer. Complaints about dog bites should be reported to the Craftsbury Health Officer.
Stray Animals
If you come across a loose dog, contact the Animal Control Officer or the Constable. The shelter will hold the dog for five days before putting it up for adoption. In order to reclaim a dog from the shelter, the owner must have proof of registration and rabies vaccination and must pay a fine.
If you are looking for a lost pet, there are many places to go for help. Call all of the veterinary hospitals in the area (there are several) as well as the Animal Control Officer. You can also try posting on Front Porch Forum or Facebook to get help looking for your pet.
Dog Faqs

Congratulations on your new dog! You have 30 days to register him or her.
-
Your dog needs to get vaccinated no later than 6 months of age, and don't forget their booster!
-
If you are living here, so is your dog. You also have the added incentive to be a good tenant and make sure your dog is up to date with vaccinations and is registered. Anyone with concerns is welcome to look at our town's registry. If your dog isn't on it, your landlord will likely hear about it.
-
Losing a pet is so hard. Please email ol call the Town Clerk to let us know if your dog has passed.
-
Well, this could get ugly. Your dog will have to be quarantined for 10 days at your cost. The person your dog just bit isn't going to be very pleased that they might have a rabies shot in their near future, and you could be facing a penalty from the town for not having your dog registered, on top of a complaint from the person your dog bit.

Oh my goodness it’s so easy! All you have to do is bring a copy of your dog's rabies vaccination to the Town Clerk’s office, or mail it, or email it along with the proper fee. No room here to go into detail, but this little tag can be a real life-saver if Fido takes a Spring stroll in the upcoming months!)

You will be charged a late fee, may be liable for a fee up to $500.00 and in the end, your pet may be taken from you because IT IS THE LAW TO REGISTER YOUR DOG.
