True Biz, a novel by Sara Novic, provides insight into Deaf Culture through the lens of three characters: a teenager raised by hearing parents who has always had to assimilate into public school, her new friend who has been raised secure in his place in Deaf Culture, and their school principal, who is hearing and a child of deaf adults. This is a story of sign language and lip-reading, disability and civil rights, isolation and injustice, first love and loss, and, above all, great persistence, daring, and joy. Absorbing and assured, idiosyncratic and relatable, this is an unforgettable journey into the Deaf community and a universal celebration of human connection.
The Craftsbury Public Library will hold a book discussion of True Biz on Sunday, August 13, at 5pm. Stuart Soboleski will lead the discussion, with sign language interpretation provided. Books are available to borrow now at the Craftsbury Public Library.
